Singapore

After enjoying our time in Sydney, we flew on to Singapore. We had planned two nights there.

Our final destination was Europe. So, Singapore, being about half way between New Zealand and Europe, gave our internal clocks time to adjust to the 12-hour time zone difference.

We took a cab from the Singapore airport, directly to our accommodation at the Goodwood Park Hotel in Singapore city. The hotel was in a great location being only a 5-minute walk to the famous Orchard Road shopping precinct.

With a lot of city to see and very hot weather, we decided that the double-decker sight-seeing bus was the best option for us.

This proved to be a good move as we got to see a lot of sights in a short space of time. And, given that we were jet lagged, it was quite relaxing and a lot of fun.

One of the sights we particularly liked was Little India - a maze of colourful streets, chock-a-block with restaurants and temples.

We also liked Chinatown with its colour, restaurants, and street sellers.

The interesting architecture of Singapore was a highlight.

We thought that the very large and sculptural Marina Bay Sands Hotel was stunning, with its three columns of hotel rooms topped by a boat-shaped structure.

In front of that, is the amazing Art and Science centre with its flower shaped design.

There were many more sights – the historic City Hall and Supreme Court buildings with their colonial look, ultra-modern buildings, and many large parks.

And, of course, thousands of shops, in fact it’s a shopper’s mecca!

We are not really into shopping, especially as we were only at the beginning of our trip, but it was all so colourful, vibrant and fascinating.

After a long day, we fortified ourselves with a gin-sling at the beautiful (but very expensive) Raffles Hotel, before venturing back into the heat again.

Happier and cooler, we eventually made our way back to our hotel for a good lie down.

The next day, we collapsed really. We briefly ventured out into the heat to visit Orchard Road, but we were starting to feel the jet-lag.

Then quite quickly it seemed, we were back at the airport again for yet another flight, this time to Frankfurt, Germany to collect our new campervan.
