After driving from Brussels, Belgium, we were heading south to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - the only Grand Duchy in the world. We stopped a few times on the way there, and one stop was Clervaux, a small and beautiful town situated in a valley beside the River Clerve.
Clervaux is a pretty place to walk around. It has a beautiful castle that dates back to the 12th century. It has been restored and now houses the famous Edward Steichen "Family of Man" exhibition. While we were there, a vintage car rally arrived with all sorts of lovely old cars being driven into the town centre.
Soon after leaving Clervaux, we arrived at our Air-BnB accommodation in Luxembourg. It was in the very small village of Canach just outside Luxembourg city. It was convenient as we had off-street parking, and it was only a short drive into town.
The next day we drove into Luxembourg and headed for the Place d'Armes - the main square, and found it very attractive being surrounded by cafes and trees.
The old town of Luxembourg City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits on a cliff which overlooks the valleys of the Alzette and Petrusse Rivers.
It was once fortified and from the old ramparts above the Chemin de la Corniche, you can get great views over the rivers, and of the casemates called The Bock.
The Bock is a series of passages and rock galleries built under the original fort. They were once used to house cannons and soldiers, and are still visible today.
Leaving there we walked into the old city and wandered around for hours. Later, we drove around the more modern side. We saw heaps, including the old Thungen Fort and the township of Grund alongside the river.
On our last night there, we drove to a lovely restaurant called La Famille, in Wormeldange village on the banks of the Moselle River.
Overall, while we thought Luxembourg was nice, with its attractive buildings and narrow winding lanes, it didn’t blow our socks off like some other places had.
This is part of a bigger blog on our travels around England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Belgium and Luxembourg. The first blog is called "Off to do the UK in a motorhome".
